Messiah Men

The men of Messiah Lutheran Church meet the last Saturday of every month at 9 AM at Chicken Chef – 1501 Olive Diefenbaker Drive ( the corner of 15th Avenue east and 28th Street East) breakfast and fellowship. Everyone is welcome. Bring a friend.

History

The men’s group at Messiah was formed in the early 1990’s under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Dennis Serfas. He and several of the men who organized the first groups, Fred Routley, Cliff Swenson, Morris Hesje and others, had a vision that gathering men together could further God’s work within Messiah and within the community of Prince Albert. The development of the men’s group was also the time our congregation moved to the current location on 15th Ave East.

Early activities included focus on monthly breakfasts, sometimes hosted at the church, Bible study and maintenance projects that were needed in our church building and church grounds. Average attendance in the early years was 8 – 10 men at breakfast.

Current

The men’s group continues to thrive as God’s blessings and gifts are in action. The group meets once a month on the fourth Saturday of each month @9 am for breakfast, fellowship, Bible study and  some business activities as required. Our attendance averages 15 – 18 men who attend regularly, and others who attend when they can.

The men host a spring fishing trip to Anglin lake and also includes a guest speaker at the breakfast that is hosted at Anglin. The guest’s theme is most often his life of faith, which is both informative and instructive to all who attend.

The men’s group also hosts a fall golf tournament at Silver Hills golf course. Again, there are times when we have a guest speaker at breakfast prior to the tournament.

During the balance of the year, the men’s group is busy hosting a pancake/sausage lunch after service in September,  a Shrove Tuesday (on Wedneday) pancake/sausage supper and an Easter Sunrise breakfast. Funds raise are used for projects both within the church such as youth travel, sound system upgrades, and also the Canadian Food Grains bank project in Birch Hills.

For the past several years, Messiah men have been instrumental in hosting a men’s’ retreat in conjunction with Kinasao Lutheran Bible camp. This came about after several men attended the Synod men’s retreat in Arlington and were inspired to create a similar experience for men in our area. We have been blessed to have the support of Kinasao as some years our attendance was lower than it needs to be to cover all costs, but they also recognize the value of growing a retreat and that God will provide the resources needed to cover costs. That is now the case and the next retreat for late March 2013 has already begun to take shape.

Bible study and devotion is a key part of the men’s group. Bible study continues with the use of our study Bibles “Master Builders Bible for Men” The Lutheran Men in Mission Edition of the SERENDIPITY BIBLE for Personal and Small Group Study. This past year we have been using the Sunday gospel texts as study material.

Men’s group continues to purchase these bibles for distribution within the congregation and community as one way to support the faith life of men in the congregation.
